The Department of Commerce is one of the promising streams of Lala Rural College. It started its journey in 1984 as a semi-commerce stream. In August 1992, a full-fledged Commerce Department was started at the Higher Secondary level, and in 1994 the stream was extended to the degree level under the affiliation of Assam University, Silchar.

After a long and progressive journey, the Commerce stream was provincialized on 14th August 2013. The department presently offers Higher Secondary and Degree courses under FYUG.

The department adopts various teaching-learning methodologies including classroom discussions, ICT presentations and content-based learning to enhance the overall academic growth of students.

Apart from regular classroom teaching, the Department of Commerce encourages students to participate in classroom seminars, industrial visits, market surveys, interactions with local entrepreneurs, NSS programmes and cultural activities. These activities provide students with practical and hands-on learning experiences.

The department has a strong alumni network whose members are presently working in different sectors including corporate organisations, banks, government and semi-government organisations. Several former students have also successfully established and managed their own businesses.
